Private treatment guidance

Please read our Private Treatment Guide (PDF) for more information on receiving private treatment and surgery in the UK or abroad which includes information on: private tests/procedures, follow-up treatment, medications, fit notes, transfer back to NHS treatment and document translation.

Private referrals/supporting letters

If you need a supporting letter for a referral to a private clinic (ie Ross Hall, BMI), you should submit your detailed request through askmyGP. Please allow a minimum of 5 working days to receive your letter from the GP. We would suggest refraining from booking any appointments at the private clinic before receiving this letter to avoid missed appointments and charges. Please note, the practice is not liable for any cost incurred as a result of missed private appointments.

Surgery abroad without NHS referral

Choosing to pay to travel abroad for surgery is not recommended by NHS Scotland, or by the surgical specialist associations in the UK. If you still wish to do this, be aware that NHS Scotland is under no obligation to provide pre and post-operative care other than emergency care. Please visit NHS Inform for more information and guidance.
