Cervical Screening Awareness Week 17th – 23rd June

What is cervical screening?

Cervical screening (also called a smear test) is a quick test to check the cervix (neck of the womb) for the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), the main cause of cervical cancer. Cervical screening aims to identify whether you are at higher risk of developing cervical cell changes or cervical cancer. This means you can get the care or treatment you need early.

What happens at cervical screening?

At your cervical screening (smear test) appointment, a nurse takes a sample of cells from your cervix using a small, soft brush. The test only takes a few minutes. If you feel worried about going for cervical screening, you are not alone. It may help to know as much as possible about what going for cervical screening is like. You could ask someone you trust about their experience, speak to your GP practice.

Cervical Screening Tips

Everyone has a different experience of cervical screening. If you are looking for ways to make cervical screening (a smear test) better for you, there are lots of things you can try. You can talk to practice staff about any concerns, ask for an appointment at the start of the day, ask to book a long appointment or take someone you trust with you.
